Blog Post #4

Ignominy.  This word is used many times in The Scarlet Letter.  Most recently in our reading, the word shows up on page 151..."half maddened by this ignominy."  For your blog post today, write one paragraph that explains the meaning of Ignominy and why they word keeps showing up in this story.  Give two examples.

For Friday, read chapter 12 and finish the vocabulary and questions. 

Thursday, November 11

Today is a work day.  Finish the writing assignment from yesterday and then work on the vocabulary for chapters 10-13 and the study questions. 

Wednesday, Chapter 11 and Writing Assignment

On Wednesday, we read Chapter 11 and worked on the letter writing assignment.  The letter writing assignment is a letter to Governor Bellingham discussing Hester's punishment.  The letter must be 5 paragraphs.

Friday and Monday

Friday we read Chapter 6 and finished the vocab and the questions.  There was also a Folder collection.  On Monday, we took a quiz over chapters 1-6 and then skipped ahead to chapter 9 and read that as a class. 

Wednesday, November 3

Today we need to read chapter four and five.  After you finish chapter four, finish your questions and vocabulary for chapters 1-4.  When you are done with that, move on to reading chapter 5. 

Tuesday, November 2

At this point, you should have finished reading Chapter 2 and the vocabulary and questions for 1 and 2.  You should also have completed your first blog post for the Scarlet Letter.  After the warm up today, we will read chapter 3.  Make sure that you have notes for each chapter!

Blog Post #1 for Scarlet Letter

In the Puritan world, men were considered to be the head of the household.  The men made all the decisions and the women were to be obedient to them.  Men were also suppose to be the spiritual head of the household making all decisions about worship and Godly matters.  Today's society has changed greatly since the time of the Puritans but has it really?  Think about the world you live in.  Is your family more Puritan like or more modern?  Describe the head our your household and who makes the decisions.  Give some examples of times when your dad or mom has had to make a decision for the whole family.
Also, what rules from the Puritan world are you glad you don't have to follow today?  Are there any rules that you wish we still followed?  Lastly, has all the change from the days of the Puritans been a good thing or a bad thing and why?

Thursday

For today's assignment, finish reading Chapter two and complete the vocabulary and study questions for Chapter 1 and 2.  If you finish with this, begin reading chapter 3.

Wednesday, October 27

Today's warm up was also a group activity about common laws and Puritan laws.  If you were absent, you will have to complete the assignment by yourself.  We started The Scarlet Letter and read chapter one together as a class.  Students read Chapter two by themselves. 

Monday and Tuesday

Monday was Puritan Research Presentation day.  All groups presented.  Your individual slide needs to be in your folder.
On Tuesday we revisited the story from last week, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," and chose an excerpt to make an illustration for.
Tomorrow, we start The Scarlet Letter!

Creation Myths
A creation myth is a narrative mnemonic device which ties together reasonably well proven facts, earnestly held beliefs, and pure flights of fancy. If it adequately conveys the crucial facts needed to survive and prosper, and does so without serious drawbacks, then it serves its purpose. Such myths come in the form of fables, children's stories, religions, just-so stories, etc. While they serve to tie facts together and to fill in gaps, myths may of course leave some questions unanswered.
Your Assignment:  Create your own creation myth.  You will have a 2 page double spaced myth when you are finished.  It must follow the description(s) above (creator, creation, place and means for existence). 

Wednesday, October 13

Today in class we worked on peer editing and self editing the Dreams Essay.  You new essay, you old essay, your peer editing paper and rubric must be turned in by the end of the hour today.

Monday, October 11

We spent the class time today watching the movie that was based on A Raisin in the Sun.

Post#9 Friday, October 8

On Thursday we wrapped up our unit on A Raisin in the Sun with the test and turning in final projects.  The Dreams essay was also due.  If you were absent, your essay and final project must be turned in today and you will need to stay afer school to make up your test.
Today's blog post #9 is your last post about  A Raisin in the Sun.  For today's post I want your first paragraph to be thoughts about the play.  Did you enjoy reading it?  Do you think it is a realistic story?  Was there one character you liked better than the rest and one you disliked more than the rest? 
Your second paragraph for today's post is about you and this class.  On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) rate your work effort and performance for this class and explain your answer.  Also, include what you've enjoyed about the class and what areas you hope to improve on for this class.
Please remember that your blog post are to be well written pieces of writing.  YOU MUST USE correct punctuation, capitalization etc. to earn full credit.  Your blog post are not emails or text messages and shouldn't sound like one!

Tuesday's warm up is the Relationships activity.  Pick up the handout and an index card on the back counter. 
On Monday we read, Act 2 Scene 3 of A Raisin in the Sun.  Today, we will begin Act. 3, Scene 1.

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010

OINC day!
After making our social contract, we took a quiz over Act. 2, Scene 1. We then spent the rest of the day reviewing the OINC writing strategy and working on essays. Paragraph 1 and 2 of your dreams essay will be due as part of Friday's folder collection.

Tuesday, Sept. 21

After the warm up today, we went to Mrs. Baker's room and worked on finishing Act. II, Scene 1. Students then worked on the Study questions for Act II, Scene 1 and the notes page that went along with it. Students who finished reading early, worked on the Dreams Essay.
Quiz tomorrow over Act II, Scene 1.

Thursday, Sept. 16

After the warm up/quiz over Wednesday's reading, Thursday's class time was spent reviewing the OINC writing process and working on the Dream essay assignment. Students also had time to work on character notes and study questions. There will be a binder grade Friday. Study questions for Act 1, Scenes 1 and 2 will be due.

Wednesday, September 15

Today we did an OINC warm up and then read scene 2 of Act 1 in A Raisin in the Sun. Students who finished the reading worked on the Dreams essay assigned yesterday.

A Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
